Talk about battles that change the course of history! Before the Battle of Hastings, England was a country ruled by Anglo-Saxon royalty. After Hastings, the new Norman regime completely replaced the previous aristocracy with their own, and introduced a decidedly Continental element to the island. Others have tried since, but Hastings was the last time that England was successfully invaded and conquered! The Battle of Hastings, fought on 14 October 1066, was the decisive victory in the Norman Conquest of England, waged between the Norman army of William the Conqueror, and the English army led by Harold II Godwinson. This beautiful coin depicts a Norman knight with lance charging the hapless Anglo-Saxons, as well as the section of the Bayeux Tapestry in which Harold is killed (by an arrow through the eye - ouch!). Czar Peter the Great leads his army!
Peter was truly a hands-on commander. Today it would be unthinkable for the leader of a Great Power to personally command his or her troops in battle, but that's exactly what Peter the Great, Czar and first Emperor of Russia, did at the Battle of Poltava! He led 53,000 troops, more than two and a half times the 19,000 employed by the Swedes. After several attacks faltered, Peter ordered his infantry to advance out of their positions. With longer lines than the Swedes, a classic flanking maneuver was executed, with the Russian cavalry harassing the Swedes until their lines were overrun. So great was Sweden's defeat that the colloquialism, "Like a Swede at Poltava" remains a simile for "completely defeated" in Russian! The Battle of Poltava Pure Silver Coin is not technically part of the ongoing Famous Battles of History series like Hastings above, but it might as well be.
