Hottest Coin of the Year + the Most Popular Series of the Year!

Duel of the Ironclads, Backyard Bugs, and Bush Babies #2
!

We don't normally send out an email newsletter on Monday, but this small group of new releases from the Perth Mint is so exciting (and so popular) that we just couldn't wait to tell you all about it!

The hottest new series of the year is undoubtedly the Bush Babies of Australia - and only the first coin has been released (until now)! Today we've got issue number two - the ultra-cute Sugar Glider Flying Marsupial - for you!

Battle of the Ironclads! If that's not enough, the biggest release of the year may very well prove to be the third in the Famous Naval Battles program. This silver proof features the historic first clash of ironclad ships - the famous Civil War duel between the Monitor and the Merrimack!

To top it all off, we have the newest Young Collectors 9-Coin dollar set, entitled Backyard Bugs!

2010 Naval Battles - Hampton Roads Pure Silver Color Proof $1

Monitor vs. Merrimack! Civil War Clash of Ironclad Warships!

Famous Naval Battles - Hampton RoadsNorth v. South - Duel of the Ironclads! We are extraordinarily proud to present the Battle of Hampton Roads, the first clash of ironclad warships during the American Civil War, in what is going to be the most in-demand new coin from Perth all summer, if not the entire year!

The major significance of the battle is that it was the first meeting in combat of ironclad warships. The Confederate fleet consisted of the ironclad ram CSS Virginia (Merrimack) and several supporting vessels. On March 9, 1862 the ironclad USS Monitor had arrived and had taken a position to defend the USS Minnesota. When Virginia approached, Monitor intercepted her.

Ironclads Battle by Currier & IvesThe two ironclads fought on for about three hours, with neither being able to inflict significant damage on the other. The duel ended indecisively, Virginia returning to her home at the Gosport Navy Yard for repairs and strengthening, and Monitor to her station defending Minnesota. The battle received worldwide attention, and it had immediate effects on navies around the world.

This amazing coin features the USS Monitor, with its low freeboard and round turret, in frosted cameo relief. The battle itself is also portrayed in color in a vignette taken from a period Currier & Ives print. Get this latest of the Famous Naval Battles series now!

The Battle of Salamis Silver $1 Proof sold out quickly at the Mint! This new, Civil War themed beauty won't last long! Our recommendation - get Monitor vs. Merrimack quickly, before it sells out and goes up (like the Battle of Gettysburg Silver Proof, below)!
