As NASA’s first re-usable launch vehicle, Columbia heralded the start of a new era in space exploration. The revolutionary craft took off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 12 April 1981, with Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert L. Crippen at the controls. Completing thirty-seven Earth orbits during its 1,074,567 mile flight, Columbia glided back to Earth and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on 14 April. These new style of space craft were a huge success, but also had two disastrous episodes, and are scheduled to be retired at the end of this year. This FDC includes: • A $1 coin with a both a portrait and a coin-on-coin design, the famous holey dollar. • Four full color postage stamps - each with a face value of 55 cents. In addition to a portrait of Governor Macquarie, the dollar coin’s reverse includes depictions of a five-shilling holey dollar and a 15 pence dump. Created from a quantity of Spanish silver dollars acquired by Macquarie in 1812, they represent Australia’s first official coinage! Each stamp bears a different design. The first of four 55¢ stamps featured on the envelope depicts Governor Macquarie and an early view of Sydney. The other three stamps, which are entitled VISIONARY, EMANCIPATOR and BUILDER, portray historical images of Port Jackson, the Parramatta Female Penitentiary and the Governor’s Sydney Stables, respectively.
