Miraculous
victory by Greek triremes!
The Perth Mint just announced this brand-new series of Famous Naval Battles, the follow-up to its extremely popular Famous Battles of History set! The five-coin set will feature battles from Ancient Greece through to Midway, all depicted in glorious full color with large, beautiful ship images in a proof finish! Today, the Battle of Salamis, fought 25 centuries ago, is little known and perhaps barely remembered outside of naval history circles. Yet, like the other three decisive victories of Athens and the other ancient Greek city-states over the Persians (Marathon, Thermopylae, and Plataea), it is fair to say that we would not have Western culture or society as we know it had the Greeks faltered and lost at Salamis. A number of historians believe that a Persian victory would have stilted the development of Ancient Greece, and by extension Western Civilization per se, and has led them to claim that Salamis is one of the most significant battles in human history. Read about this most important of naval battles on our web site! We expect the Battle of Salamis Silver $1 Proof to Sell Out at the Mint! Get it at our below issue price while it lasts! |

Revolutionary
Space Shuttle Takes off!
As NASA’s first re-usable launch vehicle, Columbia heralded the start of a new era in space exploration. The revolutionary craft took off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 12 April 1981, with Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert L. Crippen at the controls. Completing thirty-seven Earth orbits during its 1,074,567 mile flight, Columbia glided back to Earth and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on 14 April. These new style of space craft were a huge success, but also had two disastrous episodes, and are scheduled to be retired at the end of this year. Read about the history of the shuttle program at NASA on our website! This is the fifth and final coin in the Orbital Space series from Perth! |
