2011 Wildlife In Need #3 - Polar Bear Family $1 Color Silver Proof

Wildlife In Need #3 - Polar BearWildlife In Need #3 - Polar Bear
We are very excited about the third release in the Wildlife in Need series, the Polar Bear Family! This program shines a light on five critically endangered species on the brink of extinction. Following hot on the heels of the incredibly popular Working Dogs program, this extremely low mintage series (only 5,000 per animal!) focuses on large, well-known creatures. Unfortunately, all are in danger of complete extermination within the next 50 years if something isn't done to protect wildlife and stop the destruction of their natural habitats.

Portrait of a Polar Bear mother and cubThe polar bear is native largely within the Arctic circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the world's largest land carnivore and also the largest bear (together with the omnivorous Kodiak bear, which is approximately the same size). An adult male weighs between 770 and 1,500 pounds (350–680 kg), while an adult female is about half that size. Although it is closely related to the brown bear, the polar bear has evolved to occupy a narrow ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time at sea and can hunt consistently only from sea ice, so they spend much of the year on the frozen sea.

As of 2008, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) reports that the global population of polar bears is only 20,000 to 25,000, and is declining. In 2006, the IUCN upgraded the polar bear from a species of least concern to a vulnerable species. It cited a "suspected population reduction of great than 30% within three generations (45 years)", due primarily to global warming.

Five Endangered SpeciesPolar Bear
This new series will feature five different endangered species, and every coin purchased will also be matched by a donation to the World Wildlife Foundation to help preserve these animals! The five animals to be featured are:

    Giant Panda Bear
    Orangutang
    Polar Bear
    Black Rhinoceros
    Siberian Tiger

Please note that the mintage limit for coins in this program is only 5,000, and we expect the Polar Bear silver proof to sell out quickly. Because of the popularity of this keystone species
(and the low mintage of these coins), our advice is - if you want the third issue in this new series, don't delay.

(Quantity discounts may be available - see web site listing)

In addition, be sure to get the Display Box to show off your collection of Wildlife in Need coins!

Wildlife In Need #2 - OrangutangSecond in Series - Orangutang
Sold OutWe still have a small supply of the second in  the Wildlife in Need series, the Orangutang! The orangutang (also spelled "orangutan") is the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great ape. The largest living arboreal animals, they have proportionally longer arms than the other, more terrestrial, great apes. They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage.

Australia 2012 Famous Battles in Australian History #4 - Battle of Kapyong
Battle of Kapyong - Fourth in Series!
The fourth in the series of new Famous Battles in Australian History Series! The Korean War began in 1950, when Communist forces of North Korea suddenly invaded South Korea, overrunning U.S. troops in the process. The Americans were squeezed into a small perimeter around Pusan harbor, which they effectively defending while United Nations troops and supplies poured in. General Douglas MacArthur conceived the bold stroke of landing at Inchon, north of Seoul and well behind enemy lines. The landing was successful and sent the North Korean forces reeling all the way to the border with China, the Yalu River. In order to aid their communist brethren, the Red Chinese crossed the Yalu River and fought the U.S. 1st Marine Division at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, setting the stage for the Battle of Kapyong.

US Marines and a Sherman TankIn Defense of Freedom, In Opposition to Communism
The Korean War began in June 1950, when North Korean forces launched an invasion of South Korea. The United Nations multinational force defended South Korea from the Communist forces, which included the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. The Australians were part of a force that was defending the Kapyong Valley, north of Seoul, during April 1951. Kapyong came to be viewed as the most significant and important battle for Australian troops in Korea.

Please note that the mintage limit for coins in this program is only 5,000, not the customary 7,500 typical of Australian legal tender proof silver dollars!

The Siege of Tobruk, during the North African Campaign of World War II, started in April 1941, when Tobruk was attacked by an Italian-German force under German General Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel. It continued for 8 months. The Allied troops endured intense bombing raids but held their ground, defying the seemingly unstoppable blitzkrieg of the German war machine. Tobruk marked the first time that an advance of German Panzers had been brought to a halt.
