2010 ANZAC Day $1 features Royal Australian Navy Destroyer
Remember Those Who Served To honor veterans everywhere, both those living and their fallen comrades, the Perth Mint of Australia has released this significant military coin celebrating ANZAC Day. This is the Australian and New Zealand equivalent of our Memorial, Veterans, and Remembrance Days. The design is interesting, particularly to sailors, those who have served in the navy, and those fascinated by warships. The HMAS Parramatta, a River-class torpedo boat destroyer built just before the outbreak of World War I, is portrayed below the bust portrait of a leading seaman of the same era. It is his sacrifice, and those of his brothers in arms who have preceded him in death (as represented by the bugler playing Taps in the background) who have secured the future liberty and happiness for the freedom loving nations of the world. 
It is quite significant that the destroyer HMAS Parramatta is depicted
on this coin - she (along with sister ship HMAS Yarra) was the first
ship to be commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). These
River-class destroyers were armed with a single 4" quick-firing gun
forward, three 12 pounders, and three 18" torpedo tubes. Both served
with distinction during the First World War.This important issue comes in a full color, lavishly illustrated presentation card that folds out into an upright display stand - all at a tremendously economical price!
