New surprise series of Great Warriors introduced!

New Perth Mint March releases!

March comes in like a lion, and out like lamb, as the old saw goes - at least here in the Northern hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it's a different story - it's summer in Australia, so the daytime highs routinely top 90 degrees in Perth this time of year. But it's not just the Aussie weather that's hot - so too are these brand-new coins and set from the Land Down Under!

There's even a surprise new release here, not originally on the calendar - the first of the new Great Warriors series, the Roman Legionnaire. Let's not waste any time with pointless chit-chat - there's new, low-mintage coins in the offing!

Here's a summary of this week's new releases:
  • Great Warriors - Roman Legionary or Centurion - First in New Series!
        - Future releases include the Viking Norseman, Medieval Knight and Japanese Samurai!
ANZAC Day Military $1 - 2nd in series features Royal Australian Navy Destroyer!

        - 2009 ANZAC Day Veterans Dollar sold out at the Mint - but still available here!

        - Previous 3 releases in the series are ALL SOLD OUT at the Mint!
  • Alaskan Husky Sled Dog Pure Silver Proof - Antarctic Territory #7
        - 2009 Explorer Sir Douglas Mawson & South Magnetic Pole also available!

2010 Great Warriors #1 - Roman Legionary Pure Silver Color Proof $1

Great Warriors - Roman Legionary $1
First in Great Warriors Series
The Roman Legionary
Talisman Coins and the Perth Mint are excited to announce the first release in the exciting new Great Warriors series! The Roman legionnaire's reputation has stood the test of time. Able to make good time on the Roman Empire's network of superior roads, the legionnaires expanded the empire, which at its height under the Emperor Trajan in 117 A.D. stretched from Scotland in the north to Persia in the East! Following on the heels of the phenomenally successful and popular Famous Battles of History and Famous Naval Battles programs, we expect the new Great Warriors series to likewise sell out in short order.

The Roman Legionary
Tough, courageous and highly-disciplined infantry soldiers, professional legionaries formed the backbone of the Roman army, a formidable fighting force that conquered and controlled Rome’s vast Empire. Rome made sure that her troops were equipped with staunch weaponry and armor. You can read more about the tactics and equipment of the Roman Legionary on our web site, as well as view incredible pictures!

A fully equipped and heavily armed and armored Roman Legionary, an infantry foot soldier. The Roman Legionary Silver Proof is the first in the new and exciting Great Warriors series, to be released by the Perth Mint. Coins commemorating the following soldiers are planned:

    Roman Legionary
    Viking Norseman
    Medieval Knight
    Japanese Samurai

Please note that our experience is that the actual coins will look even better than the Mint-generated pre-production images we have, with the coin having frosted cameo relief and deep, rich colors!

Availability Note - This coin was just announced by the Mint. We are currently taking, guaranteeing and confirming orders now. We expect to begin shipping later in March, as soon as it is available. Thank you in advance for your patience!

2010 ANZAC Memorial Day / Navy Destroyer $1 Brilliant Uncirculated

Australia 2010 ANZAC $1 BU
2010 ANZAC Day $1 features Royal Australian Navy Destroyer
To honor veterans everywhere, both those living and their fallen comrades, the Perth Mint of Australia has released this significant yet affordable military coin commemorating ANZAC Day.

The design is interesting, particularly to sailors, those who have served in the navy, and those fascinated by warships. The HMAS Parramatta, a River-class torpedo boat destroyer built just before the outbreak of World War I, is portrayed below the bust portrait of a leading seaman of the same era. It is his sacrifice, and those of his brothers in arms who have preceded him in death (as represented by the bugler playing Taps in the background) who have secured the future liberty and happiness for the freedom loving nations of the world.

The Royal Australian Navy torpedo boat destroyer HMAS Parramatta, her crew on deck and manning her gunwales, sometime during the period of 1910 to 1918, and most likely during her service during the First World War I. It is quite significant that the destroyer HMAS Parramatta is depicted on this coin - she (along with sister ship HMAS Yarra) was the first ship to be commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). These River-class destroyers were armed with a single 4" quick-firing gun forward, three 12 pounders, and three 18" torpedo tubes. Both served with distinction during the First World War.

This important issue comes in a full color, lavishly illustrated presentation card that folds out into an upright display stand - all at a tremendously economical price!

2009 ANZAC Day Still Available
Sold OutThe 2009 ANZAC Veterans Memorial $1 sold out at the Mint, but we still have a few available!

The 2009 design is both interesting and symbolic. A young child (symbolizing the future) sits on the lap of an aged former serviceman (representing all who have served in the military in the cause of freedom). You can read more about the origin and significance of ANZAC Day (Australian Veteran's Day) on our web site.

This poignant 2009 design is only available while supplies remain!

Australia 2010 Sea Life - The Reef - Seahorse Color Silver Proof

Australia 2010 Sea Life - Seahorse Color Silver Proof
Gender-Bending Seahorse!
Australian waters host the most famous (and largest) reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef. Reefs form a haven for thousands of fascinating (and often brilliantly colored) marine animals. From spectacular tropical corals to towering forests of kelp, these dynamic environments are teeming with aquatic life. Celebrating five intriguing reef dwellers, this stunning new series of pure silver proof collector coins continues with the release of the Seahorse!

The seahorse is one of the most best-known denizens of the reef ecosystem. Every schoolchild learns about these unusual animals. Although they are in fact fish (related to the pipefish), they much more closely resemble some sort of marine equine, with the head of horse and a curled tail.

Perhaps the seahorse's biggest single claim to fame is the role reversal the species demonstrates in reproduction. It is the male seahorse (and not the female) that actually gets pregnant! Here's how it works. The male seahorse is equipped with a brood pouch on its ventral (or front-facing) side. When mating, the female seahorse deposits the eggs in the male's pouch, which the male then internally fertilizes. The male carries the eggs until the young emerge, expelling fully-developed, miniature seahorses into the ocean!

Sea Life Boxes lined up

A clever innovation (and a neat little bonus!) is the colorfully illustrated outer box. When lined-up in release order, the outer boxes will form a panoramic image depicting all five reef creatures. The first coin in this series, the Lionfish, sold out at the mint in mere weeks, and the Sea Dragon and Clownfish both quickly followed suit, so we recommend ordering the Seahorse without delay!

Australia 2010 Antarctic Territory Husky Sled Dog $1 Pure Silver Proof w/Color

2010 Australian Antarctic Territory - Alaskan Husky Sled Dog $1Huskies in the Antarctic!
The ongoing Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) series has proven to be amazingly popular (with the first five issues in the series having sold out at the Mint very quickly!), and this entry in the program (featuring an Alaskan husky sled dog!) should be no exception!

A Tamaskan Husky sled dog. Huskies were introduced to the Antarctic by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1898-1900, also known as the Southern Cross Expedition. It has been a little-known fact (until the release of this coin, that is!) that Australia kept huskies in Antarctica for almost 40 years, beginning in 1954 with the opening of Mawson Station. As well as proving to be hard-working and a reliable form of transportation, they were also loyal companions and much loved by the the Australian Antarctic Expeditioners.

Get this beautiful low-mintage coin featuring two distinct colored elements (the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights and the Husky sled dog) while we have them!

Tuvalu 2010 Famous Ballets 5 Coin Set of $1 Color Silver Proofs

Tuvalu Famous Ballets 5-Coin Set of $1 Color Silver Proofs

A quintet of ballerinas take center stage while an exceedingly low mintage limit grabs the spotlight with this 5-coin proof set, struck in pure silver by the Perth Mint!

What little girl hasn't marveled at the pretty and poised ballerina, wishing to share the limelight herself some day? What art lover hasn't admired the fluid and nimble movements and the firm yet supple body of a prima ballerina? The central figure of ballet, the superstar, if you will, is the ballerina. Beautiful, elegant and graceful to the extreme, these lithe ladies make the most impossible maneuvers seem effortless.

What little girl hasn't marvelled at the pretty and poised ballerina, wishing to share the limelight herself some day? What art lover hasn't admired the fluid and nimble movements and supple body of a prima ballerina? But easy they're not. This exhausting form of dance is very hard to master, taking years of study and practice to achieve perfection. Ballet is physically demanding, requiring the use of every muscle in the human body. In fact, many sports observers and professional athletes consider ballet more difficult and complicated than any other sport, even though ballet is often considered merely a performing art.

Please note, the mint pre-production images of these beautiful proof coins do not do them justice. The fields are deeply mirrored, the relief devices are white-frosted cameo, and the rich, metallic colors of the ballet vignettes are incredible!

Availability Note
With a total mintage limit of only 2,500 sets, and with previous multi-coin silver sets from the Perth Mint being among the hottest commodities in modern numismatics, we recommend getting your Famous Ballets Five Coin Silver Proof Set now!

We have been made aware that the majority (over 60%) of the Famous Ballets Silver Proof Sets are going to the East and Far East, whence they will never return. That means that fewer than 1,000 of these sets will be available for the rest of the world! Consequently, we expect a very fast sell out at the Mint, just like the Great Rivers Journeys 5 Coin Silver Proof Set, which, although released only a few months before the Famous Ballets Set, is already sold out at the Mint. If you want to be one of the lucky few to own this set (much less at our below-issue price), don't delay!
