Cook Islands 2011 Battle of Midway Silver $1 Proof with Color

World War II Epic Battle - Carrier vs. Carrier Slugfest!

Famous Naval Battles - Midway We are proud to present the Battle of Midway, where the underdog United States Navy, heavily outnumbered and still reeling from the devastating sneak attack at Pearl Harbor, dealt a stunning blow to the Imperial Japanese Navy at Midway Island in early June, 1942.

Described by British military historian John Keegan as "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare", the Battle of Midway was a huge engagement between aircraft carriers. The Japanese Combined Feet clashed with the numerically inferior United States Pacific Fleet, commanded from Pearl Harbor by Admiral Chester Nimitz. Douglas Dive BomberSo many of the details have entered legend:  The miraculous repair of USS Yorktown at Pearl Harbor in 72 hours, after being heavily damaged at the Battle of the Coral Sea. The code breaking and deception by Navy cryptanalysts, which laid bare Japanese plans and set the stage for an American ambush. The indecisiveness of Japanese Admiral Nagumo as he changed his planes' armament. The incredible timing of the arrival of the American dive bombers, able to press home the attack unharmed, as the Japanese fighters had been drawn low by the attacks of U.S. torpedo bombers. And so many others.

By battle's end, four Japanese fleet carriers had been sunk, with a near-total loss of their experienced and irreplaceable aircrews, at the cost of one American carrier, USS Yorktown.

We like this design best of all in the series - and the Mint didn't sugarcoat it, either!
This coin portrays Yorktown's sister, USS Enterprise (sporting her signature pennant number 6 on her flight deck), as she launches planes into the wind. Above her fly two Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless dive bombers. The color vignette depicts the Japanese carrier Akagi (a converted battlecruiser) aflame and about to explode, while another Dauntless flies overhead, having just released its deadly payload!

2011 ANZAC Memorial Day  RAAF Brewster F2A Buffalo Fighter $1 Brilliant Uncirculated

Australia 2011 ANZAC $1 BU
2011 ANZAC Day $1 features Brewster F2A Buffalo Fighter Plane
To honor veterans everywhere, both those living and their fallen comrades, the Perth Mint of Australia has released this significant yet affordable military coin commemorating ANZAC Day.

The design is interesting, particularly to Americans, for it portrays a fighter plane built in the United States. Below the plane are two fighter pilots in of the Royal Australia Air Force (RAAF), wearing World War II-era flight suits. It is their sacrifice, and those of their brothers in arms who have preceded them in death (as represented by the bugler playing Taps in the background) who have secured the future liberty and happiness for the freedom loving nations of the world.

The Brewster F2A Buffalo fighter aircraftIt is quite significant that the airplane pictured on this coin is none other than the Brewster F2A Buffalo fighter plane, for this plane was built in the United States! A number of these fighters were "loaned" to the Royal Australian Air Force during the darkest days of the Second World War.

For more exciting WWII action, see the Battle of Midway coin above!

This important issue comes in a full color, lavishly illustrated presentation card that folds out into an upright display stand - all at a tremendously economical price!

2011 Calico Jack the Pirate $1 Brilliant Uncirculated with Color

Australia 2011 Calico Jack the Pirate $1 BU
Golden Age of Piracy - Calico Jack
Shiver me timbers! The mere mention of the word "pirate" conjures up mental images of scalawags with eye patches, peg legs, hooks, nose rings, earrings, and parrots, shouting, waving cutlasses and the Jolly Roger!

The Perth Mint of Australia has done Calico Jack Rackham, one of the world's most merciless buccaneers, proud. The notorious pirate is depicted in a dramatic portrait (drawn from original source material!) with his ship in the background riding at anchor. The color image depicts the skull and crossed swords flag known as the "Jolly Roger", as well as the ocean in blue.

Calico Jack period portraitJack Rackham, born in England in 1682, was a moderately successful pirate in the Caribbean whose moniker, "Calico Jack", reflected his preference for colorful clothing. It was Rackham who devised the world famous pirate standard, the Jolly Roger (pictured in color on the coin).

Yet Calico Jack is best remembered for having two women in his crew, and the extraordinary fact that both Anne Bonny and Mary Read were accepted by the men as their equals! When Rackham's ship was captured, the female pirates fought 'til the bitter end, while their drunken shipmates surrendered after feeble resistance. Tried in Jamaica in 1720, Rackham and his men were hanged and gibbeted, but both women escaped death by claiming to be with child!

The Calico Jack Rackham Color Dollar is the third in the ongoing Golden Age of Piracy series, to be released by the Perth Mint. Coins commemorating the following buccaneers are planned:

Jolly Roger Pirate Flag     Blackbeard
    Henry Morgan
    Calico Jack
    Black Bart
    William Kidd

Best of all is the price - you won't need a chest full of booty to acquire these affordable, full color Pirate dollars!

2011 Great Composers #5 - Franz Liszt 200th Anniversary Silver $1 Proof

Tuvalu 2011 Great Composers - Franz Liszt $1
200 Years of Lizst's Music!
An important composer, Liszt was said by his contemporaries to have been the most technically advanced pianist of his age (and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time)! Atypically for a Romantic composer, he did not die relatively young (unlike the other four composers featured in this series, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann and Mahler).

In 1842 "Lisztomania" swept across Europe. Women fought over his silk handkerchiefs and men wept openly at his piano concerts. His playing was celebrated and praised for its brilliance, strength and precision, with his concerts likened to ecstatic experiences.

As a composer, Liszt was one of the most prominent representatives of the Neudeutsche Schule ("New German School"). He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work, in which he influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated some 20th-century ideas and trends. Some of his most notable contributions were the invention of the symphonic poem (or tone poem), developing the concept of thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form and making radical departures in harmony.

Great Composers - Five Coin Display Box Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth with this new silver proof, the fifth (and final) coin in the Great Composers series by the Perth Mint.

2011 Treasures of Australia #5 - Keshi Pearl + Mother of Pearl Inlay

Fifth and Final Entry in the Treasures of Australia series!

Sold OutTreasures of Australia #5 - Keshi Pearl + Mother-of-Pearl InlayPearls Silver Proof
Here is the fifth and final entry in perhaps the most anticipated collector coin series ever released, the Treasures of Australia program! The Perth Mint has united two of the world's most coveted sources of real wealth - precious metals and gemstones - in this unique proof coin. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and because of this, the word "pearl" has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable. A traditional bridal gift, pearl is also the modern birthstone of those born in June.

Keshi Pearl in a Mother of Pearl Inlay
The beautiful Keshi Pearls are prized for their high luster, and this coin contains one of these precious gems, encased in a nacre (commonly called Mother of Pearl) inlay that shows off the marine treasure beautifully.

One of the most anticipated coins of the year, a near-instant sell-out of the Silver Pearls is all but guaranteed! We recommend IMMEDIATE ACTION to get this coin while you can!

Treasures of Australia #5 - Keshi Pearl + Mother-of-Pearl InlayPearls Gold Proof
This beauty's design depicts the source of its desirable riches - the Australian marine environment, one of the world’s most copious sources of South Sea pearls. Set within this vignette is a transparent capsule containing a genuine keshi pearl and a mother of pearl inlay that frames the gem.

Pearls are unlike other gemstones because they do not have to be cut and polished to enhance their natural beauty! As a result, they have been prized throughout history - witness Johannes Vermeer's famous painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted c. 1665!

Of course, we can't help but admire the keshi pearl even more when it is surrounded by one full ounce of pure (99.99%) gold! Add this double-dose of beauty and wealth to your collection today!
