Explore Africa's Wilderness! In the 19th Century, so little was known about the vast stretches of Sub-Saharan Africa's wilderness that map-makers often
left huge areas of the interior blank (or "dark"), leading to the nickname the "Dark

 Long
after both North and South America had been well-mapped, Africa
remained a mystery to the West. Lake Victoria and the source of the
Nile River was not sighted by Europeans until 1858 (the eve of the
American Civil War). Keep in mind that when Henry Morton Stanley
stumbled upon the missionary Dr. Livingstone, in 1871, he had been lost
to the outside world for six full years!Talking about Africa conjures up the wonder of uncharted territory. Surprises abound around every turn. Explorers never know what dangers or treasures might await them in the unfamiliar expanses of savannah and jungle. We sent our intrepid adventurer off to explore some African countries for treasure - Benin in Western Africa, and Malawi in East Africa.
