Warm Temperatures Herald Indian Summer! We're
not sure about your neck of the woods, but here in the Midwest, it's
been downright hot the past few days - we actually hit 90 degrees on
Saturday! This is "Indian Summer", that brief reprieve of warmth, when the leaves start changing color, before Old Man Winter sends the mercury plummeting. It's warm out there this weekend, so in keeping with the high temperatures, we present some intriguing and hot Native American designs from the Royal Canadian Mint. During our celebration of Indian Summer, we offer the newest of these, the 2011 Silver Wolf $5 Coin, plus some other great releases from recent years. While the origins of the term "Indian Summer" are unclear, it has been in wide usage for over 200 years, and has supplanted other terms used for the same phenomena, even in Britain and other parts of Europe! (We are also fond of the Russian designation Babye Leto or "Old Ladies' Summer", which we're certain we don't understand, but still it has a nice ring to it.) We really enjoy summer's last gasp, almost as much as we like these neat themes inspired by the first Americans. Let's take a look at the Native American Themes in this week's email: War Chief Joseph Brant Silver Dollars - Mohawk war chief Thayendanegea in 4 different varieties!- Proof Silver $1 - Brilliant Uncirculated $1 - Special Edition Enamel Silver $1 - And the 2007 Proof Set with Gold-Plated Silver Proof $1 Return of the Tyee Silver Proof - The Salmon's Circle of Life, Sold Out at the Mint - Beautiful 2-Color Gold Plating! - Designed by Native American artist! Mohawk War Chief Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant)
![]() This
Mohawk leader and British military officer during the American
Revolutionary War was perhaps the best-known North American
Indian of his generation. Just 15 years old when he fought his first
battle for the British during the French and Indian War, he also
received an English education and was a visionary who understood that
his native people faced inevitable change as the "new world" opened up
to Europeans. He united various Indian nations to protect their interests, and
was highly respected by both sides as he negotiated land for the Six
Nations. All of these coins from 2007 are long sold out at the Mint and available in limited quantiles here! Native American Design with Two Color Gold Highlights!
Based
on a hand carved, red cedar shield originally created by Canadian
artist Jody Broomfield of the Squamish Nation, Coast Salish people,
this beautiful silver proof is a visual representation of the Native
American appreciation of the circle of life, as represented by the
positioning of the two salmon. The coin is highlighted with two
different colors of 24-karat gold plating (a
Royal Canadian Mint first!) - both rose gold and yellow gold! (Rose gold is also known as red gold and
pink gold.) The
rose gold colors the salmon, where it appropriately suggests their hue
as well! The fish are surrounded by a band with
the phases of the moon, which further enhance the theme of life's
rhythms. Traditional engraving preserves the visual effects and
textures of the cedar bark rope that form the outer ring of this
decorative band. Stuck in pure silver with a proof finish, this wonder
is made all the more desirable by its unusual, $3 face value! |
