Reward: Outlaw Ned Kelly 4-Coin Set + Free limited edition print!

Outstanding Silver Proof Set Commemorates Outlaw / Folk Hero Ned Kelly!

Ned Kelly's famous helmetNed Kelly's fame is such that he is well-known here in North America, even if he's not (yet) a household word. Americans can certainly identify with the independent spirit and anti-authoritarian attitude of this most famous of all Australian outlaws. Like Jesse James, Ned Kelly rode at the head of a gang named for himself; like the James Gang, the Kelly Gang had the sympathy of ordinary folks and could live off the land; and like Jesse James, Ned Kelly is to this day considered a hero to some and a villain to others.

Unlike the James Gang, however, Ned Kelly and his gang wore suits of bulletproof, cast iron plate armor in their final showdown with the law! So surprised were the authorities at his invulnerability that they believed Kelly to be supernatural being, and not a mere, mortal man!

This new box set from Australia's Perth Mint is handsomely executed (pardon the pun), with all the bells and whistles we've come to expect from the artisans at Perth:

Ned Kelly Wanted - Reward Poster   • Four stylish & extremely well-designed vignettes
  • Exceptional combination of color and cameo frosted proofs
  • High quality, real wood presentation box to house the coins
  • Detailed, beautifully illustrated, full color booklet, with an individually numbered certificate
  • Bonus FREE limited-edition, numbered full-color print
  • A total mintage limit of only 1,880 sets and prints (with matching numbers). Coins will not be offered individually.

What's not to love? We're so excited about the Ned Kelly 4-Coin Silver Proof Set that we're sending out this special, mid-week edition of our newsletter just to bring you the news!

How afraid were the authorities of Ned Kelly? The Parliament of the State of Victoria passed a most unusual piece of legislation, the Felons' Apprehension Act, giving ordinary members of the public the right to shoot any of the Kelly Gang on sight! The reward for the Ned, which had previously been set at £4000, was raised to 8000 pounds sterling (an incredible fortune back then!)

Blue-Ringed Octopus
As an added bonus today, we're also proud to offer an extremely limited number of the sold out 2008 Deadly and Dangerous Blue-Ringed Octopus $1 Silver Proof with Color! The total mintage was only 5,000 and they sold out fast, so if you need one, get it now! Details are further on in the newsletter.

2009 Outlaw Ned Kelly 4-Coin $1 Silver Proof Set with Color and Numbered Print

Limited Edition 4-Coin Silver Proof Set with FREE bonus print!

Ned Kelly 4-coin set in package with printThese extraordinarily well-executed coin designs depict four separate vignettes, telling the story of Ned Kelly's criminal career, culminating with his hanging death 130 years ago!

Ned Kelly had a problem with authority, to put it mildly! Cattle rustling, bank robbery, murder and mayhem were all in the offing wherever the four-member Kelly Gang appeared on the scene. Desperados of the first rank, Ned, his brother Dan, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart were true bushrangers - outlaws able to disappear for months at a time and live off the land in the harsh Australian outback.

Ned Kelly's famous helmet One reason for Ned's fame is undeniably the incredible suits of plate armor he and his fellow gang members wore for protection during their final siege battle with the law. Large, heavy (nearly 100 pounds of cast iron each!) and elaborate, each suit included a head-enclosing helmet. For decades it was believed that Kelly and his Gang must have had the assistance of a sympathetic blacksmith to forge their armor, but recent tests have confirmed that they were laboriously manufactured by hand by the outlaws themselves in a crude bush forge!

The concept of bullet-proof plate armor worn by a desperado was memorably adopted by director Sergio Leone in the archetypal Spaghetti Western film A Fistful of Dollars, the first of a three-film trilogy in which Clint Eastwood stars as "the Man with No Name". All four suits of Kelly armor are still in existence, with Ned Kelly's personal suit one of the most important artifacts of pre-Commonwealth Australia in existence!

2008 Deadly and Dangerous Blue-Ringed Octopus $1 Silver Proof with Color

Tuvalu 2008 Octopus $1 Silver Proof with Color
Sold-Out Octopus Special Offer!
Sold OutLong sold out at the mint and going up, up, up in the aftermarket, we have had numerous requests for the 2008 Blue-Ringed Octopus coin. We have been fortunate to find a very small cache of them to offer!

The Greater Blue-ringed Octopus mostly eats crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. It also eats reef fish that stray too close. It injects them with a powerful neurotoxin that easily paralyzes them. They pounce on their prey, paralyze them with venom and use their beaks to tear off pieces. It is currently one of the most dangerous known sea creatures and, despite its small size, it stores enough venom to kill about 25 adult humans within minutes. This spectacular, pure silver proof silver dollar is highlighted in frosted cameo relief, with the octopus itself accented in vibrant color!

This is the third release in the Deadly and Dangerous series from the Perth Mint. The first two releases, as well as the fourth (the Saltwater Crocodile) have all increased significantly in value. Given the theme or topic of these coins as well as the woefully inadequate mintage limit of only 5,000 per release, it's only natural that collectors have flocked to these beautiful coins and driven the prices skyward!

Availability Notice - With only a handful of these available (less than 10) we reserve the right to limit orders. Don't delay!
