Two New Releases Celebrate Polish Military History

Poland's long and tumultuous past offers a fascinating opportunity for any student of history, from the glory days of the 17th century, when Hussars dominated the battlefields of Eastern Europe, to the darkest hours of September, 1939, when Poles mounted an heroic, yet ultimately futile, defense of their homeland in the face of Nazi and Soviet aggression. Today we shine the spotlight on two new, intriguing coin programs which depict diverse aspects of Poland's military history!

This 3-coin program marks the 70th anniversary of the onset of the bloodiest war the world has ever seen, a six-year struggle of democracy against totalitarianism, from the country where it all began.

This is a must for every collection!

The 200 Zlotych Gold Proof depicts Warsaw in flames, while its guardian spirit, the warlike Mermaid of the Vistula, defiantly brandishes her sword and shield.

2009 Poland 70th Anniversary of the Start of World War II 2 Zloty Nordic Gold

Start of World War II 2 Zlote
The Battle of Westerplatte
On the wind-swept Westerplatte peninsula (as depicted on this coin), in the wee hours of September 1, 1939, the old German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire with its main battery of four 11" guns at a small Polish military depot and its protectors. Thus, the first shots of the 20th century's bloodiest conflict were fired, and the Second World War began.

2009 Poland 70th Anniversary of the Start of World War II 10 Zlotych Silver Proof

Start of World War II 10 Zlote Silver Proof
Terror Bombing of Wielun by
Luftwaffe Ju 87 Stuka Dive Bombers

On September 1, 1939, at about 04:40 am, Stuka dive bombers of the German Luftwaffe attacked the town of Wielun indiscriminately. Approximately 90% of the historic old town was destroyed, and many important buildings were hit, including the medieval Gothic church, the old town hall, and the hospital (despite a huge Red Cross sign painted on its roof). About 1,200 civilians died, representing 8% of the population.

The bombing of Wielun is considered one of the first terror bombings in history, and the very first in of World War II. The bombing had no military justification. Tactically, there were no Polish military forces stationed in Wielun. Strategically, the town held no heavy industry.

Stuka Dive Bomber in actionThis double A-side silver proof is shockingly direct.
One side portrays a map of Poland rent in two down the middle, with two military movement arrows thrusting into Poland. The western arrow bears the swastika of Nazi Germany, while the eastern arrow bears the hammer and sickle of Soviet Russia. The other side depicts German Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers, swastikas evident on their tails, in the midst of their bombing run on the center of old town Wielun.

Much more about the bombing of Wielun, the terror weapon Ju 87 Stuka, and the no-punches-pulled attitude of this remarkable coin program can be found on our web site, including many additional historical images!

The Siege of Warsaw
The Siege of Warsaw (also known as the Battle of Warsaw and the Defense of Warsaw) began one week after the start of the Second World War, on September 8, 1939. From the first hours of the war, as the capital and largest city of Poland, Warsaw was the victim of an unrestricted aerial terror bombing campaign.

Ground fighting around the city started on September 8, when the first German armored units reached the Wola area and southwestern suburbs of the city. Despite German radio broadcasts claiming to have captured Warsaw, the attack was stopped and soon afterwards the Polish capital was placed under siege.

Formation of bombers invade WarsawDuring the siege the Polish defenders repulsed several full-scale German assaults, including a final one on September 27. The siege lasted until September 28, when the Polish garrison under Gen. Czuma capitulated.

This gold proof features the historic clock tower burning on one side, while on the other side the Warsaw Mermaid stands defiant, sword and shield in hand, as all around her centuries-old city burns to the ground. See below for a medal featuring the Warsaw Mermaid, with information about her legend!

2009 History of the Polish Cavalry - The Hussars 2 Zloty Nordic Gold

2009 Polish Cavalry 2 Zloty Hussars
Hussars: 17th-Century Winged Knights
The splendidly elaborate dress of the hussars has captured the imagination of generations. Yet for two centuries, the Polish hussar was at least as well known for his speed, heroism and force of attack on the battlefields of Europe. The Hussars of the 17th Century is the third series in the History of the Polish Cavalry program.

What set the Polish hussars apart were their wings, which had been the cavalry's trademark since the turn of the 16th century. Initially, the wings were attached to the horseman’s saddle; later they were fixed to the hussar’s backplate. The wings were mainly worn during parades, in pairs, whereas in combat hussars occasionally wore short, single wings.

Poland 2009 Cavalry Hussars 10 Zlotych Silver Proof
Splendid Knight in full Regalia!
The Hussar knight was dazzling but deadly. "The Hussars are the most beautiful cavalry in Europe, in terms of men, splendid horses, brilliance of dress and bravery of horses." – François-Paulin Dalairac wrote about Polish hussars in his book on the reign of Polish King, Jan III Sobieski, in 1699. The Polish Hussars were the main type of cavalry in the Polish Army between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Using their long lances as their primary weapon, the Polish Hussars could effect a devastating charge that would break the lines of any infantry. Apart from the feathered wings, hussars were also known to wear animal skin capes over their plate armor. Tiger, leopard, wolf, bear and lynx skins were all sported, occasionally replaced by embroidered Eastern-style capes called ”kilimki” and burkas, which were popular among commanders of the hussar units.
