Traditional European Engraving and Craftsmanship! Our
buyers are always scouring the numismatic world for hidden gems, great
finds, and artistic wonders, so we're truly proud to announce this
latest assemblage that we've unearthed! Old World craftsmanship has
never gone out of style; in fact, the traditional European ethos is
more in demand today then ever! Today we present the culmination of the
minter's art!Not surprisingly, the gorgeous designs of Switzerland's Shooting Thalers are always high on our want list as we travel, but the mintage limits on these gorgeous coins are always inscrutably low. Consequently, it's taken a few years for us to gather sufficient stock to be able to offer them in reasonable quantity - which we do in this week's newsletter! Swiss quality (be it for timepieces, knives, chocolate, or numismatic art) is renowned the world over, and these delicacies certainly prove the rule! They just don't make them like this any more (except in Switzerland!). Three Important Notes 1) For the first time ever, we can offer a complete, ten-year date run of silver Shooting Thalers! 2) We present a tiny number of investment-grade, gold Shooting Thalers (typical mintage = 150)! 3) The new, 2011 Shooting Thalers are finally available (in both silver and gold)! Switzerland 2011 Shooting Thalers This week we introduce the new 2011 Shooting Festival Thalers.
We've never made a secret out of our love of
traditional design and aesthetics (nor of affordable, low-mintage
gems). The Shooting Thaler series continues the European tradition of
the finest medallic art in spades! The 2011 Shooting Thaler depicts a
quaint and charming town scene from the Canton of Uri, complete
with railroad bridge and steam locomotive! We have previously offered a few back dates of the Swiss Shooting Thalers, and were not surprised at the overwhelming response. This week we are excited to unveil a full date run of silver Shooting Thalers, going all the way back to 2002 (with its classic Una and the Lion motif), along with a few dates of the next-to-impossible-to-find gold Shooting Thalers! Swiss Shooting FestivalsCalling shooting the national sport of Switzerland would be an understatement, to say the least! Today, the Swiss Shooting Association boasts 85,000 active, dues paying members! That amounts to over 1% of the total population! At a Swiss Federal Shooting Festival (a major event, held every five years), over 50,000 marksmen will convene for four weeks to demonstrate their shooting skills. Unprecedented Opportunity We do encourage quick action, as we have only a very small number of each, which we offer on a first-come, first-served basis. The silver talers are never found for less than $150 (when they can be found at all), and the gold coins are nearly impossible to locate, and then only above $2000. We know our prices are not merely reasonable, they are low, so to delay is to risk missing out. |

Classic
allegorical designs are always a favorite here at Talisman Coins, which
makes this 2002 Shooting Thaler a staff pick! It features a standing lady, representing Helvetia, the
allegorical female personification of the Swiss Republic. Unlike the
traditional representation of Helvetia, armed with spear and shield,
this Helvetia presents herself in the guise of Una and the Lion. Una
and the Lion is a story from the epic, allegorical poem The Faerie
Queene by Edmund Spenser. The story of Una was applied to Queen
Victoria when she took the British throne at the age of 18 in 1837.
Most famously, the scene was minted as a gold 5 pounds coin (a
proof-finish pattern) in 1839, with Una representing Victoria and the
Lion representing the entire British Empire. On this artistic and
renowned coin, Victoria with her scepter guides the ship of state by
pointing the way for the lion. One of the most famous and desirable coin designs in the history of numismatics, it is also one of the most valuable. Only about 400 examples are known, and can easily fetch six figures at auction! Fortunately, the silver proof we offer here is significantly less expensive! Read more about this famous design on our website, then be sure to get one while they last! Retail Price $149.95 - Special SALE Price Only $119.95 Each!
![]() What's
the connection between Switzerland and the California gold rush of
1849, you ask? (Or, why is there a miner forty-niner panning for gold
on the obverse of this Swiss coin?) Well, the link is more significant
than most Americans (or Swiss, for that matter!) may realize! You see,
in 1834, an adventurous Old World youth, recently having served in the
Swiss military, traveled to New York to seek his fortune. This young
man was Johann August Sutter. By 1839 he had established Sutter's Fort
in California. Nine years later, in 1848, gold was first discovered at
Sutter's Mill, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sutter's complete
story is on our web site, check it out (and the symbolism of this
American design) there!
We have a very small number of these, so be sure to get this historical Shooting Thaler now!
Retail Price $149.95 - Special SALE Price Only $119.95 Each! ![]() Here's
an extremely handsome silver proof, struck in high relief, in the
finest tradition of medallic art! So detailed and meticulous is the
engraving that under a loupe, tiny details of the allegorical scene can
be discerned! The perspective in this coin is amazing, in part due to
the artistic excellence of the sculptor / engraver, and in part due to
the use of high relief, which allows for more depth of design. Even the
traditional motif around the rim is significantly raised above the
field. In
the foreground, a beautiful, half-nude Swiss lass in classical dress
gestures to towards the city of Fribourg (with its Gothic cathedral)
behind her with a gentle sweep of her arm. The lady in question is an
allegorical figure. She may be interpreted as the town of Fribourg
and/or the Canton of Fribourg. Likewise, she could also be interpreted
as Helvetia; her classical Roman-style toga garb is consistent with
many representations of Helvetia, including the spear-armed lass on
much of Swiss circulating coinage. (Helvetia is the allegorical female
personification of the Swiss Republic.) She leans on a shield decorated
with the coat of arms of the Canton of Fribourg (German: Freiburg),
while in her hand can be found the laurel wreath with which she will
crown the victor of the shooting festival! As with all these back-dated Shooting Thalers, the mintage for each was only 1,500, and we have a very limited number available! Make this beautiful lady part of your portfolio now! ![]() It's hard enough to find the very limited mintage, sold out Shooting Thalers in silver, but with a mintage of only 150 the Gold Proofs are truly rare! So you can imagine we are very pleased indeed to offer a few of these gold beauties!Featuring
a beautiful Swiss lass in a sheer, flowing dress who gestures to the
Bernina Railway Spiral Loop (more on this on our web site) behind her with a
gentle sweep of her arm, the design is a marvel of detail and beauty.
The denomination is 500 Francs, and the Gold Proof Shooting Thalers are presented inside a clamshell-style case with official
certificate of authenticity.
We
have only a few examples of the gold proofs, so do not delay if you
would like to add this incredible piece to your numismatic cabinet!

Here's the very picture of female empowerment - a "Swiss Miss" archer,
both attractive and a capable marksman (er, markswoman)! This distinctive coin depicts the beautiful figure
of a female Swiss archer, caught in the act of releasing an arrow from
her bow. She wears a traditional, yet diaphanous and windswept,
costume. Of course, this lady may also be interpreted as a barefoot
version of Helvetia. With a mintage of only 150 (Yes, you read that right - only one hundred fifty!), these hard-to-find Gold Thalers are extremely collectible, and we don't expect them to last long! (What are you waiting for?) |

The
Shooting Festival in 2005 was held in the City of Brusio, in the Canton
of Graubünden. Prestigiously, it was a national shooting festival
(held only once every five years).
In the foreground, a beautiful Swiss ingénue in a sheer, flowing
dress gestures to the Bernina Railway Spiral Loop (more about this landmark on our web site)
behind her with a gentle sweep of her arm.Read more about this design at our website, and be sure to get one of these few available beauties while they last! ![]() With
a mintage of only 2,000, we feel lucky to have managed to accumulate a
small group of
these hard to find beauties. The 2006 Shooting Thaler design features
the beautiful "Vreneli", the famed "Swiss Miss" (found on the gold
coins of Switzerland), in a medallic style, high relief portrait. The
pulchritude of this medallic portrait is further heightened by the
simplicity of the composition and the contrast of the blast white,
cameo design against the black, mirrored field.
Colloquially, she is known throughout the world as the "Swiss Miss",
though the Swiss themselves refer to their iconic young lady informally
as "Vreneli", a term originally used for a range of legal tender Swiss gold
coins. Coins with the Swiss Miss on the obverse were issued between
1897 and 1936, in 1947, and in 1949. Get this serene Swiss Miss while we have them available!![]()
Here's a handsomely engraved, full body portrait of the soldier and
marksman William Tell, the legendary Swiss archer. The vignette depicts
him crouched on the ground, at the pivotal moment of his life. Leaning
on his crossbow, he points to his son, Walter, from whose head he must
shoot an apple or die. One can imagine the most obvious instruction he
gives his son - "Whatever you do, boy, don't move!" It is interesting to note that a similar,
bust portrait of William Tell appears on the Swiss 5 Francs coin to
this day.![]()
We have to admit, we have a thing for women with weapons! Be they girls
with guns, dames with daggers or sisters with swords, we've being
carrying that flame since we can remember - female empowerment indeed! This distinctive coin depicts the beautiful figure of a female Swiss archer, caught in the act of releasing an arrow from her bow. She wears a traditional, yet diaphanous and windswept, costume. Of course, this lady may also be interpreted as a barefoot version of Helvetia. ![]()
The 2009 Shooting Festival was held in
Obwalden. This striking coin from the festival depicts the beautiful figure of the half-nude
Helvetia instructing a Swiss archer in his marksmanship. She
holds a laurel sprig or branch in her right hand while pointing with
her left. Her right arm rests on her traditional shield, this year
emblazoned with the arms of Obwalden, site of the annual Cantonal
Shooting Festival, as indicated by the legend in German. Mintage of only 1,500, incredible beauty, and sold out at the mint! What more do we need to say? ![]()
We are thrilled to have a few examples of this beautiful gold proof from the mintage of only 175.
The allegorical design featuring Helvetia wearing (or almost wearing) a
classical Roman-style toga, while giving archery instruction to a Swiss
archer looks even better in gold! Be sure to act quickly if you want to
add this distinctive coin to your collection, as our supply is small and will likely not last long! |
