Great Outer-Space Themed coins and sets!

From the First Orbit to the First Man On The Moon!

Space: The Final Frontier[Cue William Shatner. Begin dramatic music.]
Space. The final frontier. These are the updates about very popular, outer space-themed coins.

What brought this on? I enjoyed seeing the new Star Trek movie this year, not once, but twice! I'm not a Trekkie, but this is easily one of the most entertaining films of the year. And I'm fascinated by the prospect of exploring other worlds, even those fictional ones on the silver screen.

Who doesn't marvel at the heavens, wonder about life on other planets, or ponder the mysteries of the cosmos? Or marvel at man's achievements in the areas of science and technology? In the Space Race of the Cold War, and its ongoing programs, these two separate fascinations merged, to incredible effect. Consider that a mere dozen years passed between putting the first man-made satellite (Sputnik) in orbit and landing the first man on the Moon (Neil Armstrong)! Twelve years!

Orbiting CoinOrbitals Rotating Silver Proofs
Leading off, our "Five Coin Mission" - the Perth Mint's fabulous Orbitals program. This is really a case of form following function - the outer ring of each coin rotates around the core (Earth). The latest in this series was just released, and it's a doozie! The First Man on the Moon Silver Proof commemorates Neil Armstrong's historic, "one small step" on the lunar surface 40 years ago in 1969. The other three are available in limited quantity, with the top secret fifth coin (Space Shuttle, anyone?) to be released next year.

Neil Armstrong Moon Landing features "Orbital" technology!

First Man on the Moon OrbitalThese extraordinary designs from the Perth Mint feature the new "Orbital" technology, allowing you to literally rotate the images of the space events around the central image of the Earth! The unique construction of these coins allows the outer ring to revolve, or orbit, around the center. Look at these babies go!

Each coin in the series commemorates an historic event in the Space Race, from the launch of the first Sputnik satellite, to the first steps of Neil Armstrong on the moon!

Neil Armstrong, first man on the Moon coin Neil Armstrong - First Man on Moon
From time immemorial, people have gazed at the heavens and wondered about the nature of that largest and brightest object in the night sky, the Moon. Those of us alive in 1969 remember July 20 very well, for it was on this date that one of humanity's most daring endeavors reached its successful apogee. In leaving his bootprint in the lunar dust, Neil Armstrong of the United States became the first human to set foot on another heavenly body. One of the transcendent achievements in human history, Armstrong summed up the monumental nature of what his step on the Moon meant for our species:

"One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

Moon Landing Collage

An Exceptionally Well-Designed Silver Proof
The images of the Apollo 11 astronauts' journey to the Moon were recorded by both television and still photographs, and are without a doubt the most iconic of the 20th century. The Perth Mint has done a masterful job in capturing each of the quintessential images on the rotating, outer ring of this pure silver proof. The scenes, in order, are:

    Saturn V Rocket
Lunar Command Module Columbia with Lunar Lander Module Eagle attached
    Lunar Landing Module Eagle descending
Neil Armstrong in space suit on lunar surface
    Bootprint in lunar soil

A triumph of both technology, determination, and the American spirit that still makes us proud 40 years on. Even better, we're offering it at a significantly below-issue sale price! Don't delay!

Sputnik Orbital CoinSputnik - First Satellite in OrbitSold Out
The Sputnik I satellite was the first of a series of robotic spacecraft launched by the USSR. The Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957 surprised and shocked the media and public at large. The size of a beach ball, the polished aluminum orb with swept-back antennae sped around the world at 18,000 mph, transmitting scientific data from the edge of space by way of its famous, chattering beeps.

Sputnik's legacy was profound, especially in America, following hard on the heels of the failure of the first two U.S. launch attempts. The launch of Sputnik demonstrated that the Soviet Union had taken a technological leap ahead of its Cold War rival. This was the stellar equivalent of the "shot heard around the world", providing the impetus for the United States vs. Russia "Space Race" over the next decade. The event shocked the world, especially the United States, and led to intense competition to getting men into space and, less than twelve years later, to the moon.

Yuri Gagarin, first man in space orbital coin Yuri Gagarin - First Man in Space
On April 12, 1961, 27 year old cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human in space and the first to orbit the Earth. The Air Force Senior Lieutenant had been selected to join the Soviet space program in 1960. Subjected to intensive physical, mental and psychological training, he was chosen ahead of nineteen other contenders to "engage single-handedly in an unprecedented dual with nature".

As his spacecraft, Vostok 1, blasted off from Baikonur launch pad in Soviet central Asia, Gagarin shouted "Poyekhali!", that is, "Let's go!" Reaching a height of 302 kilometers, he completed a single orbit of the Earth in 108 minutes, while traveling at a speed of over 16,000 mph. In this way, Gagarin became not only the first human in space, but also the first to orbit the planet - and thus to see it from outer space! He famously noted to Soviet mission control, "The Earth is blue...How wonderful. Is is amazing."

First Space Walk Orbital CoinFirst Space Walk
Alexei Leonov became the first man to walk in space on March 18, 1965, when he left the Voskhod 2 capsule 500 km above Earth, an historic act with near fatal consequences for the former air force fighter pilot.

After floating in space for an official time of 12 minutes and 9 seconds at the end of his 5.35 meter tether or safety line, Leonov experienced a nightmare scenario. His spacesuit had inflated in the vacuum of space to such a degree that he was now too large to reenter the airlock! He opened a valve to vent air out of the suit, and was barely able to back inside to rejoin compatriot Pavel Balyayev.

International Year of Astronomy Color Silver Proofs

Explore the Mysteries of Deep Space!

The famous Crab Nebula, as seen from the Hubble Space Telescope orbiting high above Earth. In 1609 Galileo put his eye to a telescope, ushering in the modern science of astronomy. Astronomy as a science not only seeks greater understanding of the heavens, but also our place therein. In 2009 we celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo's seminal astral observation with the International Year of Astronomy, as featured on these great colorized silver proof coins!

2009 Year of Astronomy Australia 2009 $1 Astronomy Proof
Humankind has gazed at the stars in wonder since time immemorial. Long before recorded history, man learned to navigate by the stars, predict time and season through  celestial observation, and had given names to all the constellations and heavenly bodies in the night sky.

We have to admit that this is one of the coolest coins we have encountered in quite a while. The mint-supplied images are great, but this beauty looks even better in person! With its very low mintage limit of only 7,500, we feel that as the word gets out about this sleeper, it may disappear faster than anyone expects! Get it before it sells out!
