As the tale goes, he was a priest in Rome, persecuted by Emperor Claudius II, imprisoned and interrogated. The emperor had decreed that young men should remain single in order to increase the size of his army (believing that married men were too distracted to make good soldiers). St. Valentine was accused of performing secret marriage ceremonies, and was arrested and thrown in prison for it. Legend has it that before his execution, he had a confidante spirit a letter to a young girl, the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended, in a parting note signed "from your Valentine". While the "facts" of history may be a little uncertain or embellished, we nevertheless have something rock solid to count on...everyone loves a nice token of affection on February 14th!
