Get the venomous Lionfish, first
in the new Sea Life series of pure silver proofs!

Australian waters host the most famous (and largest) reef
system in the world,
the
Great Barrier Reef.
Reefs form a haven for thousands of fascinating (and often brilliantly
colored) marine animals. From spectacular tropical corals to towering
forests of kelp, these dynamic environments are teeming with aquatic
life. Celebrating five intriguing reef dwellers, this stunning new
series of
pure
silver proof collector coins begins with a release portraying
the Lionfish.
The Venomous Lionfish
Covered in bands ranging from red to tan to black, the Lionfish has
very long pectoral and dorsal fins. The dorsal fin comprises
an
array of extremely venomous spines, which are used for protection
against predators. Growing to around 12 to 14 inches (about 35
cm)
in length, the lionfish can be found in tropical waters around the
west, north and east coasts of Australia. They have also been
introduced to other, non-native habitats, including the Atlantic coast
of Florida, where they pose a serious threat to indigenous species
unaccustomed to their venomous spines. This burgeoning lionfish
population is believed to have originated (based on DNA testing) of
only 6 or 7 fish that escaped from home aquaria, possibly during one of
many recent hurricanes.
The lionfish is one of the most venomous fish in the reef. Lionfish
have poisonous dorsal spines that are used purely in defense. When
threatened, the fish often faces its attacker in an upside down
posture, which brings its spines to bear. However, a lionfish's sting
is usually not fatal to humans. Once stung, a person may experience a
variety of symptoms, including extreme pain, headaches, vomiting, and
breathing difficulties. A common treatment is soaking the afflicted
area in hot water, as very few hospitals carry specific remedies or
anti-venoms. However, immediate emergency medical treatment is still
advised, as some people are more susceptible to the venom than others.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) advises
everyone (especially divers and fishermen) to be extremely cautious and
avoid contact with the venomous spikes of the lionfish. Usually,
lionfish are not aggressive toward humans and will almost always keep
their distance when given the opportunity, so they pose a relatively
low risk. Although their stings are very painful, they are not
generally considered deadly.

Panoramic Reef View
Another
clever innovation (and a neat little bonus!) is the colorfully
illustrated outer box shipper. When lined-up in
release order, the
outer boxes will form a panoramic image depicting all five reef
creatures.
A special,
five coin display box
is available at a nominal additional charge. This is a superb way to
protect and present all five coins in their full color, illustrated
cases.

Obverse
The central color image depicts a lionfish making its full defensive
display, with venomous dorsal spines erect and fins extended to ward
off its enemies. Stylized waves form the background. The Perth Mint's
"P" mint mark is judiciously hidden between fins at the 10:00 position
near the rim. The legends define the theme: LIONFISH and AUSTRALIAN SEA
LIFE - THE REEF.
Reverse
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in crowned profile facing
right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl
earrings, was executed by the sculptor Raphael Maklouf. The
legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also
appear. The legend 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.
