A limited-mintage, very scarce first day of minting cover of the brand-new toonie in pristine uncirculated condition!

Sold out at the Mint!To celebrate the year 2000 and the Millennium, the Royal Canadian Mint released a special circulating commemorative coin with a unique, one-year-only design. This features a mother polar bear and two cubs on it, the famous "Family of Bears" image. It is also known as the "Path of Knowledge" toonie, with the image representing the mother bear teaching her cubs and imparting her wisdom and experience on them.

This design was created by well-known Canadian nature and wildlife artist Tony Bianco. Tony is known not only for his plein-air outdoor art, but also for being the designer of the 2006 10th Anniversary Toonie commemorative.

This coin is not the circulation-finish coin, but rather the specially-struck, specimen-finish version that is today very desirable. Only 5,000 of the specimen Family of Bears coins were issued, making them truly hard-to-find!

The two dollar coin, nicknamed the "toonie" or "twonie" (a play on words combining "two" and "loonie") was introduced in 1996 and features an outer ring of nickel and an inner core of aluminum bronze. The toonie features a distinctive bi-metallic coin-locking mechanism patented by the Royal Canadian Mint. This innovative technology allows the two dollar coin to last about twenty times longer than the two dollar note it replaced!

Obverse
The obverse features a novel design to celebrate its Millennium and the year 2000. A mother polar bear with two cubs facing right looks expectantly toward the east, as if instructing her offspring. This novel commemorative toonie design was created by accomplished artist Tony Bianco. The legends KNOWLEDGE SAVOIR and the date also appear.

Reverse
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in profile facing right. This portrait, the third effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian coinage, was executed by artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") and the date also appear.

Packaging
The Family of Bears $2 coin is handsomely presented in an solid-wood display case made of real Canadian maple. The display case opens to reveal the coin and to form an easel that can be displayed on a shelf or table top. The case has a laser-etched front with the family of bears image burned into it, and is protected by a white outer box.
