The Loonie Dollar
In 1987 a new one dollar coin replaced the one dollar bill in Canada. Introduced as a cost saving measure, the new coin was instantly nicknamed the "loonie" thanks to the lovely loon design created by well-known wildlife artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael. The name caught on and Canada gained a new word at the same time as Canadians began using the new coin every day. The circulation version of the loonie one dollar coin is made of aureate (nickel plated with bronze). However, the one on this set is minted in solid, sterling silver with a proof finish.

Investment Note
The 2008 Baby Lullabies Set contains a proof loonie dollar minted in sterling silver. This silver proof loonie dollar is not available in the 2008 Double-Dollar Proof Set (the aureate version is included instead), and it is not available as a single coin either. All collectors of Canadian dollar coins and all silver dollar collectors need this coin, so this set is one of the few ways to acquire what will certainly be a sought-after issue!

Obverse
The classic loonie design of the common loon, facing right. The loon design was first used on the Canadian dollar in 1987. The denomination and date of issue also appear.

Reverse
A frosted cameo of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA ("Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God") also appears.

Packaging
This attractive set comes in a full-color, bilingual fold-out package. The large folder opens to show off both sides of the proof loonie silver dollar and features charming images. A full-color, detachable picture frame is included as part of the set.
